Study of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/ HDPE/ Alumina Nanocomposites and their characterization
Abstract
The technology to produce functionalized nano alumina reinforced ultra high molecular weight polyethylene UHMWPE nanocomposite; their resulting microstructure; their tribological and mechanical properties were investigated. The melt intercalation method was followed for development of these nancomposites. An ultra high molecular weight polyethylene UHMWPE/ HDPEblend based nanocomposites containing functionalized nanoscaleAl2O3 with 0.0%; 0.1%; 0.5%; 1% and 5% by weight were developed. Abrasive wear index of developed nanocompositesand wear mechanism is studied in correlation with micrograph of worn out surface. The dispersion of fillers in matrix were also studies using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The various mechanical properties and thermal stability were studied and the influences of nano filler loading on these parameters were observed.
