A Comprehensive Review on the Business Strategy and the Policy based Reforms Adopted in the Search of a Sustainable and Reliable Power Supply System in India

Baidyanath Bag, Tripta Thakur

Abstract

The primary reasons for power sector reform are different in developed and developing countries. The main driving force for power sector reform in developed countries are to realize efficiency gains in the generation and distribution segments, which are made possible through technological innovations. But the main driving force in developing countries, including India, seems to be to attract private sector investment in the power sector. Promoting private participation by facilitating incremental investment, felt not sufficient to bring reform; hence policy reforms for appropriate business environment was included. As a result, changes in business strategy also took a key role along with the policy changes. Various forms of business models for generation as well as distribution evolved across Indian power sector. This article describes the journey of Indian power sector to the context of the adoption of business strategy and policy based reforms, during different eras of time.
